Faith: A word packed full of meaning. A word sometimes difficult to explain. In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus says we need only have faith that is equivalent to a mustard seed; in other words, the least bit of faith is sufficient. In yet another story, Mark has Jesus rebuking the disciples for their lack of faith. Was Jesus implying that the disciples had no faith at all or that they didn’t have enough faith? What is faith, anyway? Depending on your source, faith has many meanings. I like one that says faith is the belief in things that cannot be seen. Some definitions use the term “hope” instead of belief; however, I prefer the stronger word belief. Faith does not mean that, as a Christian, I merely hope that I can trust in God – it means that I believe in that trust. St. Augustine, one of our early Church Fathers used the term, ‘faith seeking understanding.’ I quite like that term. Faith is a journey toward a fuller understanding of what it means to have faith, toward a fuller understanding of what it means to believe in God, in God’s son, and in the power of the Holy Spirit. May each of us be strengthened on our journeys as we seek to understand what it means to have faith.
