Welcome to Whatcoat United Methodist Church-Dover. We are proud of our 161 years of ministry to the greater Dover community. As the oldest African-American church in Dover we are concerned about the welfare of people, regardless of race, creed, or color!

Our mission is to make disciples! To repair the fabric of people's lives, from Generation to Generation,through holistic ministries of nurture, outreach and witness.

Visits are made to various nursing homes in the area. Communion provided.

Whatcoat's parish nurses provide various information on various health issues. We are partnered with BayHealth Medical Center and offer cooking classes for diabetics.

Life Enrichment Leadership Training (4-H)

Reaching Out in Mission

After-school partnership with Delaware State University's Cooperative Extension Dept, which builds self-esteem, strengthens math skills along with verbal and written communication skills. Ages 5-15 participate free of charge.

Screenings for blood pressure, sugar levels, and various other health care screenings are offered periodically throughout the year

Light aerobics and exercise for those who are interested in basic physical fitness

Hammond Singers

Men & Women's adult Group. They sing traditional and contemporary gospel music..

Whatcoat Social Service Agency/Ruth A. Dorsey Shelter

Reaching Out in Mission

Provides a 30-day stay for homeless familes. Helps transition back into the community by providing food, clothing, job skills and mental health counseling, as well as assistance with utility,medical and rent payments to persons in need.

Whatcoat Community Development Corp./Whatcoat Village Apartments

Reaching Out in Mission

A low-income, Section 8, apartment complex providing affordable housing to families for 33 years.

A community program for senior citizens that provides a time of socializing, meals, sight-seeing tours, fellowship, guest speakers, crafts, etc.

Brown Bag/Helping Hands Ministries

Hunger

This ministry is a state approved food distribution center that provides food to persons with limited incomes. Walk-ins are welcome and deliveries are made to senior citizen resident homes.

Transportation provided to the senior population, as well as the disabled through the use of Whatcoat's van and a DART handicapped bus obtained partially by a State grant.

Whatcoat Technology and Learning Center

Reaching Out in Mission

Provides assistance with job applications, along with skills training for community residents (children and adults) in computer training, desktop prublishing. There is 'no charge' to students with nominal fee for adults. Computer repair available.

The Praise and Worship Team provides praise and worship music before church services start.

Helping Hands Ministry

Reaching Out in Mission

Provides financial assistance to the needy for rent, utilities, food, medicine, transportation, overnight motel shelter, etc. Referrals come from the James Williams State Agency and through word of mouth.

S. Lowan Pitts Day Care Center

Reaching Out in Mission

Our Day Care Center has provided for 39 years, a safe loving environment for children from infancy through school age. Target audience is low-income parents, 95% purchase-of-care.

Two nurses in our church give health tips as needed and provide screenings throughout the year.

Vera's Haven Transition Homes

Reaching Out in Mission

Homeless families are allowed to stay in Vera's Haven for up to two years while they are getting help in transitioning back into the community.
